The illustrations are richly diverse too and include double spreads, vignettes and diagrams which communicate information most effectively. But it has playful elements too: fictional devices like speech bubbles to give a worm’s ‘thoughts’ and some little jokes. The written text is lively, full of engaging and relevant dialogue and extended enough to give the account gravitas. Even a simple creature like a worm has a fascinating body it cannot see, but it has five pairs of hearts. Both written text and illustrations are imaginative in judging what is likely to interest young learners. A familiar device invites readers to join a well informed grandmother and her grandchild who are exploring the worms that live in her garden. It is colourful, generous in size and use of space, and has much variety of text and illustration on each page.

This book shows that an information story can be aesthetically pleasing as well as a good source of knowledge. Sure, parents might get a laugh or two out of this.Yucky Worms Author: Vivian French Illustrator: Jessica Ahlberg Its supposed to be a cute, fun, silly book.but it is so simple that a child could have written it.try this excerpt: "Apple Pic is Yummy, mud pie is yucky".and EVERY single page has the exact same format! Then as if this book already lacked in imagination, it is though the author completly gives up on ideas at the end "Ice cream is yummy, too much ice cream is yucky"!!!!! I thought this would be a fun book of opposites to read to my signed for the baby through preschool demographic.younger infants would not be entertained this as its simple, monotonous and I see nothing to engage a toddler either!
